20 Winners of Famous Powerball Draw Come Forward to Claim Prizes
The December 1st, 2020 Powerball draw which made world headlines with its incredible sequence of drawn numbers (5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and Powerball 10), saw 20 winners share the top prize and each win R5.6 million. This week, the National Lottery Operator, Ithuba, confirmed that the last of the 20 winners have come forward to claim their prize.
One of the last to claim his prize was a police officer from Limpopo who plays the lottery religiously every week. He spent just R52.50 on his winning ticket, and he will use part of his millions to build a house for his family.
Another winner from the Western Cape, who prefers to remain anonymous, was still trying to get his head around his lucky win. He said that he regularly plays SportStake 13 but only very rarely Lotto and Powerball.
“I kept my ticket safe and followed the news to see if this was real,” he told Ithuba. “As I read about other winners who were coming forward to claim their winnings, I started believing that this was really happening and decided to also come claim.”
While he won’t be splurging his R5.6 million, he will spoil his wife with a honeymoon that they had never been able to afford to take.
Another anonymous winner from Port Elizabeth confirmed that he had spent just R40 on the winning ticket. He was a regular Lotto player but he had never won more than R20 before.
“I never gave up,” he said, saying that he can now build his wife the house of her dreams.
“We kept the ticket in the wardrobe and kept on checking that it was still there until we were able to come and claim,” said the man who is nearly a pensioner. “Now that I no longer have financial strains, I will spend more time on things that I love doing, especially gardening.”
