Leading South African hotel, resort and casino group, Sun International has responded to inflammatory comments made by Marilyn Ramos, former Miss South Africa 2012.
Ramos claimed that the hotel and casino group provided her with insufficient support during her year-long reign at Miss SA. The comments were made in response to a Heat Magazine piece that referred to her as the “worst Miss SA ever.” Ramos claimed, specifically, that she received no support and had little PR from Sun International during her year long reign.
Sun International responded that they made every effort to support her and they “can’t really understand the comments she made.”
The company stressed that while Ramos did not have an official clothing sponsor, she had help with her wardrobe throughout the year from Sun International and South African designers. In addition, the company claimed to pay business class air tickets to and from pageants, provide a generous excess baggage allowance of 100kg and provide a foreign exchange allowance for expenses during international pageants that Miss SA attends.
Michael Farr, Group Brand and Communications Manager of Sun International said the company would be happy to engage in further talks with Miss Ramos in order to help talk her through this.
Sun International operates resorts, hotels and casinos in 27 locations and 8 countries. Its casino operations are popular and attract local patrons, as well as visitors from around the world. However, it hosts many events during the course of the year that attract further visitors to its complexes. The Miss South Africa pageant is one of these events which it hosts annually.
The Miss South Africa pageant has been running since 1956 when Norma Vorster was crowned. In its 56 years of operating, the competition has undergone a number of changes.
The pageant today aims to appeal to and attract South Africa’s intelligent women. The women it applauds are smart and savvy, intelligent and beautiful. It aims to provide a platform where young women can explore their potential and push the boundaries.
Miss South Africa was appointed each year in December; however, this year, instead of being crowned in December 2013, the new Miss World will be crowned in March 2014 and will reign in the year of her appointment.
Other events hosted at Sun International’s Sun City Resort, include the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Sun City is a luxury casino and resort that attracts International visitors.
