Multi betting is where most South African punters either win big or lose everything on a Saturday afternoon. The idea is simple: combine several selections into one bet, let the odds multiply, and aim for a return a single bet cannot match. In practice, most accas are built badly, and even good picks lose more often than expected.

What Is a Multi Bet?

A multi bet, also called an accumulator or acca, combines two or more selections into a single bet. All must win for you to get paid. One loss and the whole thing is gone.

You open Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates, click "Chiefs to win" and that lands on your bet slip. You find a second match, click another outcome, and now you have two selections. Combine them and you have a multi. In a standard acca, selections usually come from different matches. If you want multiple picks from the same game, you need a Same Game Multi.

How the Odds Multiply

Take three selections at odds of 2.00, 1.80 and 2.20. As singles, a R100 stake on each returns R600 if all win. Combined, the odds multiply to 7.92, so a single R100 bet returns R792. Same games, same outcomes, but a higher payout for less stake. The trade-off is simple: singles pay per win, while the acca pays nothing if one loses, unless you take a reduced cash out.

The Bookmaker Margin

Every bookmaker builds a profit margin into their odds. A selection priced at 2.00 on one platform might be 2.15 on another. Same outcome, different price.

On an acca, that margin stacks with each leg. You are accepting the bookmaker’s cut multiple times, so your expected return over time is lower than it looks. A multi offers higher potential payout, but not better value than singles. The more legs you add, the more the house edge compounds. Comparing odds across a few South African bookmakers is one of the easiest ways to improve returns without changing your picks.

Same Game Multi

A Same Game Multi (SGM) works like an acca but within a single match. For example, Chiefs to win, a player to score first, and over 2.5 goals.

The odds still multiply, but bookmakers adjust them because the outcomes are linked. If Chiefs win 3-0, the scorer and goals market are more likely to land. This correlation is priced in. SGMs are not available everywhere yet, but they are becoming more common.

Why Most Multi Bets Fail

Two mistakes kill most accas. The first is adding too many legs. If each selection has a 60% chance of winning, a ten-leg acca lands less than 1% of the time. Bookmakers love large accas for exactly that reason. The second mistake is filling the slip with low-odds selections. Six teams at 1.15 each gives combined odds of around 2.31. That is a terrible return for needing six results to go your way.

Keep your acca between three and five legs, for example two solid picks around 1.60 to 1.80 and one higher value selection, and only add a selection you would back as a single. Treat your acca stake as a small fixed portion of your weekly betting budget and never chase a loss by doubling up on the next one.

Final Thoughts from PCSA

Multi betting rewards research and discipline, not volume. A tight three-leg acca built on genuine knowledge will serve you far better than a ten-team slip built on hope.
