AFCON 2025 Quarter-Finals

AFCON 2025 heats up as eight teams battle it out in Morocco for the honour of being crowned champions.

With seven different winners over the past eight Africa Cup of Nations editions, only unfancied Mali have a shot at becoming continental winners for the first time.

Defending champions Ivory Coast triumphed in remarkable fashion at AFCON 2023 as hosts. They sacked their head coach following a 4-0 hammering by Equatorial Guinea in the group stage, scraped into the knockout stage then stunned Nigeria 2-1 in the final.

Ivory Coast (2023 and 2015 champions), Senegal (2021), Algeria (2019), Cameroon (2017), Nigeria (2013) and Egypt (2009) have made it through to the AFCON 2025 quarter-finals without problems.

Who Will Qualify for AFCON 2025 Semi-Finals & Finals?

The tournament only really kicked off when the knockout stages started, after the 12 top-ranked sides progressed to the last 16 knockout stage. Just eight teams will now fancy scooping the prestigious 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Relative minnows Mali have served up the biggest AFCON 2025 shock, accounting for 2011 champion Tunisia in their last 16 clash that was decided by a penalty shootout.

South Africa put up a fighting battle in the tournament. Bafana Bafana missed out on a last eight berth following a 2-1 loss to Cameroon, who SA head coach Hugo Broos had guided to AFCON glory in Gabon nine years ago.

Before placing a bet on any of the remaining eight matches at AFCON 2025, it is best to consider the fixtures, head coaches, head-to-head records, historical records at the tournament, recent form, star players and squad members available to play in each game.

The goal for underperforming Morocco, the highest-placed African team in the FIFA rankings, is to end the long wait to add to their AFCON 1976 silverware success and lift the Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

Algeria have slipped from pre-competition second favourites to fifth, surpassed by the free-scoring trio of Egypt, Nigeria and Senegal.

AFCON 2025 Quarter-Final: Mali vs Senegal Preview

Mali are the underdogs when they tackle West African neighbours Senegal on 9 January, having drawn all four games after 90 minutes.

They should not be underestimated after stunning Tunisia, who had qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals without conceding a single goal, in their last 16 showdown.

Mali manager Tom Saintfiet saw his side reduced to 10-men following a red card for full-back Woyo Coulibaly after 26 minutes, but they battled out a 1-1 stalemate against Tunisia. After extra time the tie went to penalties and, thanks to a pair of shootout saves from keeper Djigui Diarra, Mali edged through 3-2 on spot-kicks.

Lassine Sinayoko is Mali’s only scorer at AFCON 2025, and with three goals could be backed to win the Goal Boot accolade for the tournament’s top scorer.

Senegal have been purring under head coach Pape Thiaw. They bagged a hat-trick of goals in three of their four games. At the other end of the pitch they have kept two clean sheets to reach the quarter-finals, helped by centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.

The 2021 champions exited the last edition in the last 16. They have been in fine fettle with two-time African Footballer of the Year Sadio Mane scoring once and providing three goal assists.

Senegal brushed past Sudan 3-1 to reach the last eight, with 17-year-old Paris Saint-Germain striker Ibrahim Mbaye on target just four minutes after coming off the bench. The teenager could pose a real threat to Mali in their quarter-final meeting.

Prediction: Senegal should be backed to triumph. Bookies will only offer low odds, unless they have a one-off promotion for the tie, because the Lions of Teranga are overwhelming favourites against defensively tight Mali.

Mali vs Senegal Best Bet Type: Bet Builders.

This is a single bet when you pick from various markets — such as total cards, corners, fouls, goals and tackles.

Mali

Mali are FIFA world-ranked no.53 and outsiders, as the joint least favourites alongside Cameroon with bookmakers, to win AFCON 2025.

  • Mali AFCON 2025 Group A games: Zambia 1-1, Morocco 1-1, Comoros 0-0.

  • Mali's top scorer at AFCON 2025: Lassine Sinayoko (3).

Senegal

  • Senegal AFCON 2025 form: W-W-D-W.

  • Senegal AFCON 2025 Group D games: Botswana 3-0, DR Congo 1-1, Benin 3-0.

  • Senegal's top scorer at AFCON 2025: Pape Gueye,
Nicolas Jackson and Cherif Ndiaye (2 goals).

AFCON 2025 Quarter-Final: Cameroon vs Morocco Preview

Five-time champions Cameroon face their biggest test at the Africa Cup of Nations when they play the hosts in a heavyweight e on 9 January.

Junior Tchamadeu and Christian Kofane found the back of the net in the 2-1 victory over stubborn South Africa in their rain-drenched clash to book their last eight berth. Shotstopper Devis Epassy was among the Cameroon heroes to deny SA.

Cameroon only recently appointed coach David Pagou, who has unleashed forwards Bryan Mbeumo and 19-year-old Kofane. Yet the Indomitable Lions have already been gifted two own goals, equalisers against Ivory Coast and Mozambique, in this tournament.

Attacking midfielder Brahim Diaz made history for Morocco by bagging the only goal in their last 16 win over plucky Tanzania. He has become their first player to notch four goals at an AFCON tournament. Team-mate Ayoub El Kaabi has found the back of the net three times in the competition.

There are high hopes from head coach Walid Regragui that the Atlas Lions will be a roaring success and go on to lift the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 1976.

Prediction: Morocco may not have yet hit top gear, but with vocal supporters acting as their 12th man they should secure a semi-final spot in a low scoring clash. Shaky Cameroon collected three victories by a one-goal margin, but they impressed during their stalemate with Ivory Coast.

Cameroon vs Morocco Best Bet Type: Over/Under Goals.
Total goals is a popular Over/Under betting market. Bookies offer various predetermined figures for you to place a wager, which include Over/Under 1.5 goals, 2.5 goals and 3.5 goals.

Cameroon

Cameroon is FIFA world-ranked no.50 and a dark horse, as the joint least favourites alongside Mali with bookmakers, to win AFCON 2025.

  • Cameroon AFCON 2025 form: W-D-W-W.

  • Cameroon AFCON 2025 Group F games: Gabon 1-0, Ivory Coast 1-1, Mozambique 2-1.

  • Cameroon's top scorer at AFCON 2025: Christian Kofane (2 goals).

Morocco

Morocco is the highest FIFA world-ranked African nation at no.12. They remain firm favourites to win AFCON 2025, despite their stuttering start.

  • Morocco AFCON 2025 form: W-D-W-W.

  • Morocco AFCON 2025 Group A games: Cosmoros 2-0, Mali 1-1, Zambia 3-0.

  • Morocco's top scorer at AFCON 2025: Brahim Diaz (4 goals).

AFCON 2025 Quarter-Final: Algeria vs Nigeria Preview

A mouthwatering clash between Algeria, who have only conceded once in their four tournament games, and free scoring Nigeria will take place on 10 January.

A last-gasp extra time goal from Algeria’s Adil Boulbina saw off resilient DR Congo 1-0 in their fiercely fought last 16 tie.

Head coach Vladimir Petkovic is vying for the prize of landing their third AFCON trophy. The Fennecs are strong at both ends of the pitch courtesy of keeper Luca Zidane, son of legendary France footballer Zinedine Zidane, and skipper Riyad Mahrez who has bagged three goals.

Nigeria, who surprisingly missed out on qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals, last won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013 and finished runner-up to Ivory Coast in the last edition.

The Super Eagles boast lethal marksmen in the shape of Ademola Lookman, a former African Footballer of the Year, and their talisman Victor Osimhen. Both goal-hungry strikers were on target during the 4-0 demolition of Mozambique in their last 16 tie.

Prediction: Tight defending by Algeria and relentless attacks from Nigeria makes this a tricky one to determine a winner, especially as both sides have reeled off four tournament victories on the spin.

Algeria vs Nigeria Best Bet Type: Both Teams To Score/BTTS

This bet is based on whether both teams can find the back of the net during the AFCON 2025 quarter-final. This punt can keep bettors on the edge of their seat until the final whistle. Do try to find a bookmaker that includes extra time goals for your wager.

Algeria

The Desert Warriors are FIFA world-ranked at no.36. Having collected a pair of 1-0 victories at the tournament, they have yet to look like convincing continental champions.

  • Algeria AFCON 2025 form: W-W-W-W.

  • Algeria AFCON 2025 Group E games: Sudan 3-0, Burkina Faso 1-0, Equatorial Guinea 3-1.

  • Algeria's top scorer at AFCON 2025: Riyad Mahrez (3 goals).

Nigeria

The Super Eagles are FIFA world-ranked at no.43 and look fearless at AFCON 2025, greatly helped by their formidable depth of attackers.

  • Nigeria AFCON 2025 form: W-W-W-W.

  • Nigeria AFCON 2025 Group C games: Tanzania 2-1, Tunisia 3-2, Uganda 3-1.

  • Nigeria's top scorer at AFCON 2025: Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen (3 goals).

AFCON 2025 Quarter-Final: Egypt vs Ivory Coast Preview

Since being crowned champions of the inaugural competition in 1957, Egypt have been the dominant nation in Africa Cup of Nations history with a record seven titles.

Yet the Pharaohs needed two extra time goals to beat battling Benin 3-1 in their last 16 contest, which included a strike from Egyptian idol Mohamed Salah.

Both Egypt and Salah have yet to hit the heights expected from them at AFCON 2025 but could turn on the style against the defending champions.

Ivory Coast, three-time AFCON winners, only topped their group courtesy of a late comeback against already eliminated Gabon.

Goals from winger Amad Diallo, Yan Diomande and Bazoumana Toure helped the Elephants brush aside Burkina Faso 3-0 to earn a quarter-final spot in a one-sided knockout encounter.

If Ivory Coast can maintain their momentum of being potent upfront and keeper Yahia Fofana remains sharp between the sticks, their opponents are going to tumble just like AFCON 2023.

Prediction: Both teams only registered narrow victories until there was free-flowing play was introduced, which resulted in each scoring three times in the last 16. This should be a cagey affair with box-to-box action, and an intriguing battle that will probably go right down to the wire.

Egypt vs Ivory Coast Best Bet Type: Half-time/Full-time.
Betting on both halves of this AFCON 2025 quarter-final increases the odds, as you are trying to predict the outcome of both the first half and the result of the match. It is best to select a sportsbook that includes extra time in the bet.

Egypt

The Pharaohs are FIFA world-ranked at no.32 and have been defensively solid at AFCON 2025, while national hero Mohamed Salah is grabbing goals.

  • Egypt AFCON 2025 form: W-W-D-W.

  • Egypt AFCON 2025 Group B games: Zimbabwe 2-1, South Africa 1-0, Angola 0-0.

  • Egypt top scorer at AFCON 2025: Mohamed Salah (3 goals).

  • Ivory Coast AFCON 2025 Group F games: Mozambique 1-0, Cameroon 1-1, Gabon 3-2.
