The Durban July is South Africa’s biggest and longest-running horse race, but it’s also so much more than that. It’s a day where racing, fashion, and celebration all come together. And it’s been that way for over a century. Here's a quick journey through its rich history and the results from last year.

When Did the Durban July Start? A Brief History

The very first Durban July race took place on 17th July 1897 at the same location as today, the Greyville Racecourse. It was a one-mile sprint, and the winner was a horse named Campanajo.

First run as a modest event for English colonists and local enthusiasts, the race quickly began to grow in both stature and spectacle. Over time, what started as a simple handicap turned into one of the biggest and most beloved sporting events in the country.

By the early 20th century, the Durban July had cemented itself as a major fixture on the South African sporting calendar. The race distance was adjusted several times over the decades, finally settling at 2,200 metres in 1970. With that change came an influx of top thoroughbreds, trainers, and punters from all over the country.

The Durban July today

But the Durban July has always been about more than just the horses. It’s a cornerstone of South African culture, as famous for its high fashion and star-studded guest list as it is for the racing itself. Every year brings a new fashion theme, and racegoers show up in their most extravagant and creative outfits, turning the day into a true spectacle of style, colour, and celebration.

Now officially known as the Hollywoodbets Durban July, the race continues to dominate the winter calendar. With millions in prize money, nonstop media coverage, and betting action across the country, it’s far more than a sporting contest. It’s a cultural phenomenon, one that captures the spirit, creativity, and competitive edge of South Africa like nothing else.

Who Won the Durban July 2024?

The winner of the 2024 Durban July was Oriental Charm, a three-year-old colt ridden by jockey JP van der Merwe. Owned by Greg Bortz, Leon Ellman, and Gina Goldsmith, and trained by Brett Crawford, he broke clear early and held off strong challengers like Cousin Casey and Royal Victory to win convincingly

That win gave trainer Brett Crawford two Durban July victories in a row, following his 2023 triumph with Winchester Mansion. Oriental Charm completed the 2,200-metre race in roughly 2 minutes and 13.66 seconds. The four-year-old is expected to return in 2025 to defend his crown.

Ready to place your bet on Oriental Charm for a repeat victory? Or are dark horses like Eight On Eighteen or Gladiatorian more your vibe?
